Planning Your Small Business Website Pt. 1

April 21st, 2011

TRANSCRIPT:

Kala Viv Williams, artist and website designer's introduction. My background is in fine art, I have been an art professor and a museum educator.  While creating websites for myself over 18 months of daily research and implementation of info on SEO, html, and best practices. I became fascinated by all I was learning and that led me to begin creating websites for others.  Creating websites uses my fine art background combined with my love of detail and general "geekiness," to learn the technical stuff. My website is: http://design.gallerylotus.com/

CLIENT WORKSHEET

You will find this form is useful. It is the start of what will become a successful, attractive website that supports your business goals. Also remember if you have the time and desire to do your own site, feel free to book a consult to get clear on what programs/options to use and clarify the information provided here.

Type of Business:

Goals of Website

· Provide potential customers w/basic info a “brochure site

· Enable customers to buy your services or products via telephone or mail-order

· Online sales

· Save time answering the same basic questions over and over

· Reduce the cost/time of marketing. (i.e. – print literature, postage.)

· Share your expertise with others via articles

Will your site be promoted by advertising, offline methods-business cards, your answering machine, and referrals? Or is it important to rank well on search engines for new customers doing a search for your product or service.1

Do you have a website, now? If so, what do you like best about your existing website? What do you like least about it?

“Who you are?” Is the first thing your website should tell your visitors?

“What you do?” What are your main products or services?

“Who do you work for?” Target Market: Describe things, like age, socio-economic, local/regional or national?

“Where do you do it?” What cities and towns do you serve or want to expand into.

Image to Convey: List 3-5 words that you want website to convey to customers. Think about the target market answer. Ex: a trendy hairdresser may list: funky, youthful, energetic, creative. Ex: a bank: solid, trustworthy, serious, conservative. Ex: a custom carpenter: creative, esthetically excellent, good taste, natural.

1. 2. 3. 4.

5.

Ideas on Design Style2: Can you list 3 websites you like and specifically what you like? Color, layout, ease of use? Keep in mind your “image” ideas.

Create an outline: here is a general guide which can be used to determine what pages your business needs. You probably won’t need all of them, some can be on same page depending on your business.

A. Home page/Start page

B. About You/Company Profile

C. Products/Services /Prices

D. Order Form

E. Customer Service/Order and Shipping Information

F. Contact Information

G. Privacy Policy

H. Legal Information/Disclaimer/Site Terms of Use

I. Helpful Links/Resources

J. Site Map for larger sites

K. Directions to your facility

L. Articles/Helpful tips pertaining to your industry

N. Photos (as separate page)

O. Calendar of Events

What you need to do:

  1. Gather up all current materials, brochures, business cards. Find photos that you want on web site. Do you have text ready to be added to site? If not you need “copywriting,” that is your text is not ready to use. Copywriting is the task of writing clear, customer friendly, SEO (search engine optimized) content for each page of your site. That is separate service. It requires whatever text you do have and a longer meeting to discuss what is missing, and what you want to highlight. For example a FAQ page is pretty standard and will save you lots on repetitive phone calls and your time.
  2. Stage 1: We discuss all of above, via phone/Skype or in person (limited local only.)

Stage 2: I will work up a plan from our discussion & submit that to you.

Stage 3: Deposit is paid. Work on site begins, you are shown a sample site without your info, this gives you time to get all materials together. You give feedback and I continue to work on site’s appearance and layout.

1 All sites have some SEO (search engine optimization) built in, but if your goal is to rank highly in search then ongoing methods need to be employed. This process happens over time and needs SEO services which I can provide.

2 Be aware that many flashy, complex sites may have cost thousands of dollars to implement.

Overcoming Anxiety with Meditative Chanting/Prayer Technique

November 1st, 2010

Recently I had what could be called a anxiety attack, over a money issue.  An upcoming podcast and book (in progress) tentatively titled Meditations on Unemployment (Zen of Unemployment) will also cover how to overcome anxiety and thrive.  My background as a certified yoga teacher, trained massage therapist and longtime Vipassana (Insight) meditator forms the core of what I write on using meditation techniques for overcoming anxiety. Having suffered from anxiety for many years I know the feeling and how it can control and limit one's life, various treatments are out there.  Foremost in many people's mind it seems is medication, which can be helpful.   Since I'm not a physician I'm going to present what has worked for me, and others as a holistic treatment for an anxiety attack. My story:

So I was very anxious-a client was to purchase a product from me and send payment.  My rent was due and the check which should have arrived had not.   Standing in my kitchen trying to make dinner, I was unable to focus and my thoughts began to swirl around "what will I do..." and so on.  At that moment, the chant below sprang into my mind.  Spirit moved me to begin repeating it-in this case it came from my background. But what I'm presenting to you dear reader is to use a short phrase from your own spiritual tradition or the one below if it resonates. From my practice of Ashtanga yoga I know by heart the lovely chant:

*Om

Swasthi-praja bhyah pari pala yantam (May prosperity be glorified)

Nya-yena margena mahi-mahishaha (May administrators rule the world with law and justice)

Go-bramanebhyaha-shubhamastu-nityam (may all things that are sacred be protected)

Lokaa-smastha sukhino-bhavanthu (And may people of the world be happy and prosperous)

In either case the technique of chanting, repetitive prayer or mantra works for overcoming anxiety for several reasons:

  • the mind is immediately occupied
  • the positive, hopeful words have an impact on the mind
  • the actual sounds in the case of Sanskrit--has an effect (even without knowing the "meaning")

Technique:

When you find yourself in a state of worry or anxiety.  Remember you can control your mind and emotions!  The thoughts of "what if, how will I, I can't etc..." then feed the feelings of anxiety, helplessness and fear.  At that moment if you can....

Nature & the Power of Manifestation

August 5th, 2010

Uses this quote

"If you travel through India outside of a village you might see a tree with threads tied around it... " from a yoga magazine to launch into an exploration of our interconnection to nature.  Discusses how that connection helped in manifesting a new place to live. Perhaps the most ideal thing to work with in this way are issues that have to do with place- such as finding a home, as the trees are basically guardians of the land.

The main points from the show are:

  • Intedependence and need for care of the Earth as a basis for healthy manifestation
  • The need to get very clear about what it is we desire (not in the how it will happen, which is too complex for us to figure out and unnecessary.)  Focus on the end result and how you will feel (all the positive feelings.)

Includes a guided metta (loving-kindness) meditation for ourselves and the earth.  May the earth be well, may she happy and peaceful and grow in harmony.

Namaste, Kalavati (Viv Williams)
